Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties have expressed their joint concern about the tragic fires in Solea region and their solidarity to the inhabitants of the area.They also expressed their deep sorrow for the loss of lives.

The parties call upon all Cypriots to actively participate and support all efforts to protect our common environment and forests. They commit themselves to working together in reforesting all affected areas in Cyprus.

The leaders and the representatives of Cypriot political parties met on Wednesday for their regular meeting at Ledra Palace, under the auspices of the Slovak Embassy.

The parties, according to a joint statement, have agreed that “reunification through a wisely structured federal solution will guarantee a long and steady development for all Cypriots in our country and should be a lasting solution.”

The issue discussed at today’s meeting was proposed by the Greek Cypriot party “Front for the Restructuring of the Centre” and was titled “The future federation our common homeland.”

The next regular meeting of the leaders and the representatives of the political parties will be held on Wednesday 28 September, 2016 at the Ledra Palace.

Cyprus has been divided since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974. The leaders of the two communities have been engaged in UN-backed talks since May last year, with a view to reach a settlement of the problem.
