The bi-communal Technical Committee on Culture is planning to host another three cultural events in the coming months, according to the co-chairperson of the Committee Androulla Vassiliou.

The first event is scheduled in the ancient theater of Salamis, the second concerns a conference with Europa Nostra and the third is an event with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and soloists from the Turkish Cypriot community.

Speaking to Cyprus News Agenycy, Vassiliou said last night’s musical event, the first the Committee has organised since it was set up, was a success, noting the participation of the bicommunal musical group “Kyproyenia”. The event was entitled “Under the Moonlight”.

“This fills us with great optimism because we believe that people share our view that through cultural cooperation and joint events we can build a new culture of peace and cooperation between the two communities”, she said.

Noting that the Cyprus problem will be resolved at the negotiations, Vassiliou said that it is very important to prepare the ground so that when a solution is found it can be consolidated and embraced by both communities.

Asked about forthcoming events, Vassiliou said the next event will perhaps take place in the ancient theater of Salamis, in northern Turkish occupied Cyprus.

She also said that a major conference with the European organisation Europa Nostra is being planned on the value of cultural heritage. This event is scheduled for late October, when the Europa Nostra will visit Cyprus for the Award for the restoration of the Church and the Monastery of Armenians in Turkish occupied Nicosia.

The third event, Vasiliou told CNA, is a concert by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra with the participation of soloists from the Turkish Cypriot community.

Cyprus was divided when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third in 1974.  UN backed talks resumed in May between President Nicos Anastasiades and Mustafa Akinci with a view to reunite the island under a federal roof. The two leaders have met in the recent past at social events.
