Cypriot swimmer Karolina Pelendritou’s achievements continue to inspire and fill Cyprus with pride, cementing her place in the pantheon of great athletes, according to the Cyprus National Paralympic Committee. The statement follows Pelendritou’s silver medal win in the 50m freestyle, category S11, at the 17th Paralympic Games, “Paris 2024,” on Saturday. Pelendritou shared on social media that she feels blessed to be at the Paralympics in Paris, living the most beautiful dream, and thanked everyone for their love and support.
As the Cyprus News Agency has learned, the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Marilena Evangelou, is traveling to Paris on Sunday to represent the Republic of Cyprus and the Government at the medals ceremony. She spoke with Karolina Pelendritou by phone on Saturday congratulating her on behalf of the State and the Cypriot Government for winning the silver medal.
Pelendritou, who is competing in her sixth Paralympic Games, expressed her gratitude on social media, saying, that “the 2024 Paralympic Games once seemed like a distant place. But here they are, and here is a silver medal in the 50m freestyle S11. The race isn’t over yet, but a part of it is, and I feel so blessed to be here, living the most beautiful dream. Thank you all for your love and support.”
The Cypriot athlete clocked an impressive 29.82 seconds in the event, earning her the silver. The gold medal was claimed by China’s Ma Jia, who set a new world record with a time of 28.96 seconds, breaking her own record from the Tokyo Paralympics. The bronze went to Ukraine’s Maryna Piddubna, who finished in 30.30 seconds.
