The Secretary-General is still considering the possibility of a trilateral meeting, said SG’s Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, in response to Cyprus News Agency question during the Press Briefing at UNHQ in New York.

“The Secretary-General is continuing to consider the possibility of inviting the two Cypriot leaders for a joint meeting to discuss the next steps on the Cyprus issue, these so-called trilateral meetings. It’s something, obviously, we’ve been thinking about, but we’re continuing to consider” he said.

Dujarric did not mention possible dates, but stressed that so far the Secretary General’s office has not sent invitations to the two leaders for a joint meeting.“I think what needs to be made clear is that no invitations have been sent out to date” he noted.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
