Cyprus’ strategic importance in peacekeeping operations, particularly in humanitarian missions across the Eastern Mediterranean, continues to grow, according to Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas.
Addressing on Thursday the opening of the annual training seminar organised by the Cyprus Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC), Palmas stressed the country’s vital role in ensuring the success of numerous peacekeeping missions.
“The geopolitical and strategic role of Cyprus has been significantly upgraded due to recent developments in our region,” Palmas said. “Cyprus plays a pivotal role in executing and fulfilling many peacekeeping missions, primarily concerning humanitarian issues.”
Palmas also highlighted Cyprus’ commitment to delivering high-quality services, noting that the country has established itself as a key hub for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations in the region.
The Minister also noted that JRCC in 2025 will mark 30 years of service dedicated to protecting human life in the face of air and maritime accidents. He pointed out that especially over the past two decades, the center has significantly enhanced its capabilities and has successfully responded to various incidents within its area of responsibility.
As a result of these efforts, he added, Cyprus had become a strategic hub for SAR services, humanitarian operations, and crisis management in the Eastern Mediterranean, a region marked by geopolitical and strategic upheavals.
He also pointed out the complex security environment in the wake of escalating conflicts in Gaza and other recent developments, describing the region as increasingly volatile. He added that in this context, “the JRCC stands as a model for regional cooperation, serving as an example for other nations looking to develop or enhance their own SAR centers.”
Palmas also praised the national and international benefits of Cyprus’ “ZENON” Coordination Center. As he said a notable example of its success was the implementation of the “ESTIA” plan, which facilitated the evacuation and repatriation of nationals from 36 countries from Israel following the events of October 7, 2023.
