We need to close the Blackwall Tunnel to southbound traffic on a number of weekends. This is for work on a new road layout on the A102, as part of the Silvertown Tunnel Project.
Closure dates and details
Saturday 7 September to Monday 9 September
All weekend closures will run from 00:01 Saturday morning (Friday midnight) until 05:00 Monday morning.
The tunnel will remain open to northbound traffic. At times there may be diversions on the approach, or northbound traffic may be diverted through the southbound tunnel.
Maintenance closures of the tunnel will continue as normal. These take place between 23:59 Saturdays and 07:00 Sunday mornings.
We will keep this page updated if further closures are needed.
Driving
During weekend closures, we expect roads and alternative river crossings in east and central London to be extremely busy with long delays to your journey. Queues along the A13 westbound between Canning Town and Whitechapel and on the approaches to Rotherhithe Tunnel throughout the weekend are expected.
For journeys in central London, use Tube and rail where possible. You can use our Journey Planner and our TfL Go app to plan your journey and check planned works.
If you need to drive during these closures, plan ahead, check before you travel and allow more time for your journey. If you need to cross the river, consider using crossings away from central London.
HGVs and other large vehicles
During closures, use routes away from central London. There are size and weight restrictions on some London river crossings.
Congestion charging will run as normal during the closures.
Woolwich Ferry
The Woolwich Ferry will operate as normal during these closures.
Check the Woolwich Ferry timetable for operating times.
During weekend closures, you may not be able to board the first ferry as long queues are expected.
Buses
Bus 108
During weekend closures, from 22:00 on Fridays until 23:59 on Sundays:
Bus 108 will operate a split service:
Stratford international – Canning Town
North Greenwich – Lewisham
To cross the river, use Tube and rail services. Auto refunds will be in place for Bus 108 customers who use the Jubilee line between North Greenwich and Canning Town.
From midnight Sundays
Northbound buses will return to their normal line of route
Southbound buses will be diverted via Tower Bridge
From 05:00 Mondays
Normal services will resume
