Cyprus elects today its MEPs and local government officials
Cyprus goes to the polls today to elect its representatives in the European Parliament as well as the members of the Local Administration, following a reform passed recently by the Parliament.
Today, a total of eight different elections will take place to elect Members of the European Parliament, elected at national level (across Cyprus), Presidents of the District Organisations of Local Government, elected at District level, Mayors, elected at Municipality level, Deputy Mayors, elected at the level of Municipal District, Municipal Councillors, elected at the level of Municipal District, Members of the School Boards, elected at Municipality level, Community Leaders, elected at Community level and Members of the Community Councils, elected at Community level. In total, there are 7,280 candidates for 3,227 positions.
A total of 682,963 people have the right to vote for the European Parliament elections while 590,248 people can vote for the local government officials.
Citizens of other Member States of the European Union residing in Cyprus may vote in elections to elect Members of the European Parliament, provided that they have reached the age of 18 and are registered on the special electoral roll. Citizens of other Member States of the European Union residing in Cyprus may vote in elections to elect Local Authorities, provided that they have reached the age of 18 and are registered on the special electoral roll.
Turkish Cypriots residing in areas which are not under the effective control of the Republic of Cyprus, who are 18 years old by the date of election and who hold an identity card of the Republic of Cyprus issued by the Civil Registry system, are automatically entered on a Special Electoral Roll and may vote in the elections of Members of the European Parliament.
For the election of Members of the European Parliament alone, polling stations will be operating abroad, namely in Greece, the United Kingdom and Belgium.
Voting is direct and by secret ballot. For the polling stations in Cyprus, voting begins at 7.00 a.m. and adjourned for one hour at 12.00 noon. It shall resume at 1:00 pm and continue normally until 6:00 p.m. For polling stations abroad, the hours shall be adjusted accordingly.
Ballot papers, which will be cast in the same ballot box, will have a different color, depending on the type of election.
Voters must present a voter ID card or identity card (citizens of other EU Member States may also vote with any other document submitted for registration on the special electoral roll, while enclaved persons may vote by presenting an identity card, passport, driver’s licence or any other official document of the Republic bearing their photograph).

The first results for the June 9 election will be known around 7:30 on Sunday evening, while the final results will be announced on Monday morning around 07:00 to 08:00.
Each party or collaboration has six candidates for the European elections. The political parties are Democratic Party (DISY), AKEL party, Democratic Party (DIKO) Socialist Party EDEK, ELAM, the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens’ Cooperation, DIPA and VOLT.
Candidates for President of the District Organisation of Local Government for Nicosia are Constantinos Yiorkadjis and Andreas Assiotis. Nicosia Mayor candidates are Nikos Tornaritis, Charalambos Prountzos, Panayiotis Mentzis and Constantinos Demetriades.
Candidates for President of the District Organisation of Local Government for Limassol are Vassilis Demetriades, Giannis Tsouloftas and Christos Vakanas. Nikos Nikolaides, Giannis Armeftis and Christos Michaelides are the candidates for Limassol Mayor.
Candidates for President of the District Organisation of Local Government for Larnaka are Aggelos Hadjicharalambous and Evaggelos Evaggelides, while Larnaka Mayor candidates are Andreas Vyras, Michalis Pekri and Soteris Ioannou.
Candidates for President of the District Organisation of Local Government for Famagusta are Yiannis Karousos, Andros Ktorides and Theodoros Pyrillis, while candidates for Famagusta Mayor are Kleri Hadjikakou, Linos Papayiannis, Andreas Vrahimis, Simos Ioannou and Vasilios Mavrou.
Candidates for President of the District Organisation of Local Government for Paphos are Costakis Constantinou, Charalambos Pittokopitis and Marios Tselepos. Paphos mayor candidates are Phaedonas Phaedonos and Evros Loizides.
