Cyprus must seek cooperation with other EU states in order to respond to the migration and refugee problems, but last week’s summit did not yield anything more with regards the need for joint action to be taken, the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou declared speaking to ‘Astra’ radio.
S.Stefanou pointed out that the government did not promote for discussion both the need of sharing the number of migrants across all EU states, while it didn’t call for Cyprus to be exempted from the Dublin agreement, which traps the number of refugees or migrants in the first country they have fled to.
The General Secretary of AKEL noted that the government is not proceeding to these actions because the European People’s Party, to which 11 EU member state governments belong, is strongly opposed to this.
