Tollington ward councillor Anjna Khurana has become the new Mayor of Islington, after being sworn in for 2024-25 at last night’s (16 May) Annual Council meeting.

Each new Mayor of Islington chooses a charity to support and raise funds for throughout their time in office. Cllr Khurana has chosen Brickworks Community Centre, a local multipurpose community association that serves to offer support, care, and a welcoming meeting space for all residents.

Upon being elected as the new Mayor, Cllr Khurana said, “I want my Mayoralty to emphasise that everyone is welcome in Islington. I am looking forward to engaging with the communities that do so much, both in the spotlight and behind the scenes, that work with and for each other.”

“I am very proud to be raising funds and awareness for Brickworks Community Centre. They are my local community centre, and they are everything that I love about our community… their doors are open to all, no judgements, no questions, just support, care, and compassion.”

Cllr Khurana has lived in and around Islington since 1994, living first in Clerkenwell and now in Hillrise. First elected as a councillor for Tollington Ward in 2018, Cllr Khurana has served on the council for 7 years. During that time, she has been a member of various committees, including the Policy and Performance Scrutiny Committee, Licensing Committee, the council’s fostering, and adoption permanence panels, and was Chair of the Employment and Appointments Committee for four years.

Before becoming a councillor, she was active in the borough as a volunteer, supporting charities promoting child literacy and safe spaces for those experiencing mental health difficulties. After being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2006, Anjna became an active campaigner for the MS Society, even jumping out of a plane to raise funds for the charity.

Cllr Khurana takes over from Cllr Gary Heather, who served as Mayor during the last year and focussed on expanding volunteering opportunities in the borough through his chosen charity Voluntary Action Islington (VAI) and held several successful volunteering fairs within communities.

The Mayor’s Consort is Micky Khurana. Cllr Jason Jackson was appointed as Deputy Mayor and his Consort is Tatiana Jackson.
