A joint event to celebrate Labour Day is co-organised again this year by the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) together with Turkish Cypriot trade unions DEV-İŞ, KTAMS, KTÖS, KTOEÖS, BES, KOOP-SEN and DAÜ-SEN.

The event will take place outside the Home for Cooperation, opposite the Ledra Palace hotel, in the buffer zone of Nicosia.

“We are here again this year to present the main axes of the joint action which for years we have been developing around the international day of struggle and solidarity of workers, the Labour Day” PEO General Secretary Sotiroulla Charalambous noted on Monday during a press conference at the Home for Cooperation, indicating that for another year Labour Day will be celebrated in extremely difficult conditions for the working class in Cyprus and throughout the world.

On his part, DEV-İŞ President, Koral Aşam underlined that Labour Day is a day of commemoration of workers’ struggles and that with the joint event, trade unions and workers from both communities send the message of their common struggle.

In the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus, participants will gather at 10:00 in Eleftheria Square in Nicosia and will then march to the Home for Cooperation in the buffer zone where they will meet with the Turkish Cypriot workers. At the same time, in the Turkish occupied areas, participants will gather at the Kyrenia Gate in Nicosia and from there will march towards the buffer zone.

As part of the event, a Joint Declaration agreed by the participating trade unions will be read in both Greek and Turkish, followed by a bicommunal music concert by singers Koullis Theodorou and Umut Albayrak.
