The 10th International Multi-thematic Scientific Bio-medical Congress, that began on Thursday in Nicosia at the European University Cyprus continued on Friday with presentations from renowned scientists, including from two Nobel Prize winners.

Prof. Dr. Gregg L. Semenza – (Nobel in Medicine 2019), Pediatrician and Professor of Genetic Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine spoke during the session on “Genetic and Molecular Medicine: New Frontiers for Humanity s’ Healthy Being”.

As an honorary key note speaker he gave a lecture on hypoxia-inducible factors in physiology and medicine. He received the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering how the body’s cells sense and react to low oxygen levels. This discovery may lead to treatments for diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Nobel Prize winner Prof. Sir Gregory Winter (Nobel in Chemistry 2018) of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Medical Research Council; Master, Trinity College, Cambridge University, spoke during the session on “Immunity Antibodies: A Revolution that Led to Modern Therapeutics”.

The Professor talked about antibodies and antibody mimics as pharmaceutical drugs. He is best known for the engineering of humanized monoclonal antibodies and their widespread use in medical therapy, particularly for treatment of cancer and immune disorders.

The congress will conclude on Saturday with the naming of Nobel Prize-winning doctors Dr. Sir Martin J. Evans (Nobel in Physiology or Medicine 2007), Professor at Cardiff University and Dr. Sir Gregory Winter (Nobel in Chemistry 2018), Medical Research Council (MRC) Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge as Honorary Doctors of the Faculty of Medicine of the European University Cyprus.

Τhe conference’s afternoon sessions on Friday featured many internationally renowned scientists who spoke inter alia about advances in robotic surgery, immunity, antibodies, cancer, vaccination and genetics.

The congress is organised by the European University Cyprus School of Medicine, co-organised and under the auspices of the Cyprus Medical Association and under the auspices of the Ministry of Health. Around 75 international speakers from world-renowned institutions attend the conference, while among the keynote speakers are Nobel Prize Winners. Scientists from Poland, Greece, Africa, Turkey, Iran, United Kingdom, Israel, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine participate in this year’s congress.

The international congress addresses issues related ia to COVID-19, neurology, genetics, cardiology, cancer, genetic and molecular medicine, diabetes etc. The Congress has featured in the past three years in the world-renowned scientific journal of the publishing house Nature “Cell Death & Disease”.

The three – day congress wraps up on Saturday. Among the notable key note speakers will be distinguished Prof. Dr. Kypros Nicolaides, Professor in Fetal Medicine at King’s College Hospital, London, who will give a lecture on  “Prediction and prevention of preeclampsia”.
