AKEL on the Cyprus Missing Persons Day

29 October 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The 29th of October has been established, by decision of the House of Representatives, as the Pancyprian Day of the Missing Persons to remind us all of the day when the occupying army released the last prisoners of war, the day when thousands of families in the country began to live with the drama and agony of their own loved ones.

Forty-eight years onwards, 775 Greek Cypriots and 217 Turkish Cypriots remain on the list of missing persons, while time is working against the efforts to determine their fate. The refusal of the occupying power Turkey to fully cooperate on the pressing issues in this effort is a huge obstacle to resolving this dramatic humanitarian aspect of the Cypriot tragedy.

AKEL will continue to stand by the side of the relatives of the missing persons and to support by all means the work of the Committee of Missing Persons (CMP) in the effort to ascertain the fate of all the missing persons of Cyprus and to inform their relatives of the conditions under which their own beloved ones perished.
