Islington Council is appealing for more hosts to help house Ukrainian refugees and transform lives in the borough.
More than 160 households in Islington have already volunteered to host almost 300 refugees, including 79 children, in their homes. Their generosity is greatly appreciated by their guests.
As some of the initial hosting arrangements are coming to an end (after six months), more hosts are now being sought to help Ukrainian refugees in need.
Jeremy, who is hosting two people in his home in Islington, said: “When Russia invaded Ukraine, we felt frustrated that there was nothing we could do to help.
“So, the Homes for Ukraine scheme was just right for us – we had a home, we could make some space in it, and we were ready to help. We understood that having new people in our home might be challenging, but that we would find a way to make it work.
“The real surprise for us was that when Lana and Lia came into our house, it wasn’t a challenge at all – it was a pleasure. Hosting has made our lives fuller and richer.”
Residents are encouraged to come forward if they can provide rent-free lodging for a minimum of six months for someone in need, whether that be a spare room or any other type of accommodation.
Hosts are entitled to a monthly ‘thank you’ payment whilst their guest is living with them.
Cllr Roulin Khondoker, Executive Member for Equalities, Inclusion, and Culture, said: “I am so thankful to everyone who has thrown open their doors to people in need during this exceptionally difficult time for Ukraine. Islington has a proud history of welcoming refugees and migrants, and it has been wonderful to see the warm reception for hundreds of Ukrainian refugees.
“If you are thinking about offering up a spare room in your home, please get in touch with us – you could make a real difference to someone’s life. Our amazing resettlement team will be happy to give you some more information about how it all works.”
