Flutter those lashes

Eyelashes exist to protect the eyes from small particles such as dust, sand and sweat. They protect whilst the eye is open, but also offer a protective barrier when closed. Without eyelashes, the eyes would dry out quicker and would be more susceptible to bacteria and infections. People without eyelashes would blink far more often.
Long, dark lashes seem to be alluring, therefore people try to enhance them as best they can, be it with mascara, eyelash curlers or treatments.
The traditional method to make lashes look thicker and longer is to apply mascara in brush strokes using the application wand, to give the added illusion of colour, thickness and depth. Waterproof mascaras are less likely to be affected by tears or water; Smudge proof is meant to be just that, but for a swimmer, or those that tend to rub their eyes, neither will be of maximum benefit.
Another option is to get them tinted, either professionally or at home using a kit from a chemist or supermarket. It’s a simple procedure that takes around 15 minutes with results lasting up to seven weeks. A simple colour test on inner wrist or neck area should be done at least 48 hours prior to full application to ensure you are not allergic to the product.
Eyelashes curlers can be used prior to mascara application to give lashes a temporary extra lift. To make this look last a longer period, an eyelash lift perming procedure can be done within an hour at a beauty salon. It involves using a silicone lift pad or disposable curling rod, held in place with eyelash adhesive, before a gentle perming lotion is applied for around 10-15 minutes. This is then removed before a neutralizing setting lotion is applied for a further 15 minutes. Lastly, a collagen conditioning lotion is applied for five minutes and when removed, a beautiful, soft, curled set of lashes are revealed that can last up to seven weeks.
For those that don’t want to go down the route of eyelash lifting or tinting, eyelash extensions can work great, especially for those special occasions where longer, thicker lashes are required for the day only. Available in most chemists and supermarket stores, strip lashes are applied with lash adhesive, last 24 hours and are removed by gently pulling away from the lid. They are reusable if looked after and kept clean.
Semi-permanent lashes should only be done by a professional therapist who is trained in the application procedure. These can last up to three weeks and are applied with a much stronger adhesive that can last a couple of months..
Always use products according to manufacturer’s instructions, as every brand works slightly different.
Go flutter those lashes!
