Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides held on Friday a telephone conversation with US  Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland. According to diplomatic sources, the discussion was held in a constructive climate and they exchanged views on the ongoing effort to resume the Cyprus talks.
 
The same sources said that Nuland expressed the readiness of the United States to actively contribute towards the achievement of progress, adding that in this context they raise the issue to the Turkish side at the highest level, combined with the need to avoid illegal actions, either in the fenced off area of Varosha, or in the Republic of Cyprus’  Exclusive Economic Zone.
 
Nuland noted that President Biden is well acquainted with the Cyprus issue and is committed to making progress within the agreed solution framework of a Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation.
 
Referring to the visit of the then Vice President Biden to Cyprus, in 2014, which paved the way for upgrading the cooperation of the two countries to new levels, she expressed the wish to further strengthen bilateral relations on a number of issues, including relations and contacts between the two peoples.

Finally, she reiterated the importance that the United States attache to developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider region, expressing will for cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus so that conditions of security and stability prevail.
 
The same sources said that the fact that the discussion took place three days after Christodoulides’ telephone conversation with the US Secretary of State and the letter from President Biden to President Anastasiades, “confirms the unprecedented positive momentum in the relations between Nicosia and Washington”.
