In response to the British Cypriot member of his consti-tuency, Marie Nicholsby, Founder Member of the Board of British Cypriots of Britain, Labour MP Matt Rodda expres-sed his support for a lasting and fair solution to a bi-social federation in Cyprus.
He said, among other things, that the events in Varosha under-line the importance of achieving a sustainable and comprehensive solution as a “matter of urgency.”
The Labour MP it was clear that under such a solution Turkey would have to withdraw all its troops from Cyprus.
He added that as a guarantor power with historical ties to Cyprus, Britain must continue to play an active role in encoura-ging talks and negotiating a peaceful solution.
In addition, the members of the Council of British Cypriots of Britain, Doros Partasides, Antonis Savvides and Spyros Papacharalambous, had a working lunch with Matthew Offord, Conservative MP for Hendon district of North West London, Chairman of the Conservative Friends of Cyprus in Parliament, and former Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cyprus.
The three British Cypriots briefed the British MP on the Cyprus issue and called for his intervention to work for a United Cyprus, both in the British parliament and in the British government, since Mr Offord is a member of the ruling party.
Ways of promoting the Republic of Cyprus positions in the British Parliament were also discussed, and it was agreed to continue contacts and organise an event for Cyprus in the British Parliament, on a date to be agreed later, as soon as health conditions permit.
