The weather should start to change a little now and we will hopefully get that spring in our step, as the new season is in the air. It’s time to get out of all those winter clothes and give your body a good old spring spa, along with everything else you are spring cleaning! I am sure everyone washes and scrubs up well, but are you doing exactly that? Most will bath or shower up, but a regular thorough body scrub will get rid of those dead surface skin cells and make your body glow. It works like that of a good facial, but for your body. You can work it for hands and feet, or an all over body thorough cleanse and glow spa treatment.

The Benefits

Dead Sea salt – Unique salt concentration is known for its dramatic improvement for so many skin conditions like those of acne, psoriasis, hives and many more. The Dead Sea is said to be nearly 10 times more saltier than other ocean, therefore causing the skin to absorb the high mineral content, like those of iodine, potassium, sodium and calcium.

Himalayan Salt – Himalayan Salt has traces of more beneficial minerals than sea salt; whilst sea salt contains bits of 72 particles, the Pink Himalayan salt has 84 essential trace elements required by the body. The Pink Himalayan salt comes from the Khewra Salt Mine in Pakistan, where the mineral content produces that unique pink colouration.

There are many body scrubs that can be purchased, like Mango & Sugar Body Scrub or Organic Belgian Chocolate & Sugar Body Scrub from The Organic Shop or the Body Shop which also does a luxury spa of the world, the Brazilian Cupacu Scrub-In-Oil nourishing body scrub. There are so many to choose from, but when teaching beauty therapy at the college, we used to make our own. It is simple to do, extremely effective and all pure and natural and will keep for some time.

Homemade Body Scrub

You will need:

Pure Granular Sea salt of choice (Sea salt, Dead Sea or Himalayan salt)

Sunflower oil

Essential oil of Rose or Citrus (any other of your choice)

A clean 5cm or  2″ approx depth shallow jar or tub with lid

Method:

  1. All that is needed is pure granular sea salt placed in an empty clean 2″ approx depth tub or glass jar.
  2. Add sunflower oil on top; there should be enough for the oil to sit above and cover the salt by approx 1.5cm or 0.5 inch.
  3. Add a few drops of essential oil of your choice to give a fragrance and also a beneficial quality, if you prefer. Rose oil is comforting and sweet, lavender may be calming and relaxing, whilst citrus can be invigorating and energizing. There are many others that you can choose from.

How to use:

Always give a little stir before use with a clean metal scoop or spoon, so that the oil blends and mixes with the salt.

Scoop out an amount and apply to the body area that needs the pampering scrub. Apply to wet skin and massage in well, but very gently with fingertips, in small circular movements – the circular movements should be upwards and inwards on the lower half of the body towards the heart, and on the upper body should be downwards and inwards towards the heart area, as this works with the body circulation. Do not work in a rough manner, as the granular salt is abrasive enough.

Wash off with a natural kind Ph shower gel like that of Simple or Sanex, using a soft sponge and working in the same circular motions. The dead skin cells should have been removed and the skin should just be shiny, smooth and really well moisturised.

Wow! Super soft, shiny skin!
