We sadly announce that Neophytos Nicolaou passed away at 6.30am this morning, Sunday 21st February 2021, at University College London Hospital in London, after battling coronavirus. He was 74.
Neophytos Nicolaou was the former General Manager of our newspaper Parikiaki and one of the main organisers of the Cypriot Wine Festival.
He leaves behind his wife Evoulla, daughter Egli, son Alex; His daughter Maria died in 2016 at the age of 46.
He also leaves six grandchildren: Jimmy, Stephanie, Leo, Zoe, Evie and Chris, and three sisters: Maro, Savoulla and Lalla who live in Cyprus.
Neophytos died at University College London Hospital (UCLH) with Covid-19. He was admitted to North London Middlesex Hospital on 9th January 2021 and transferred a week later on 16th January to UCLH which has become a specialist Covid-19 hospital.
His wife Evoulla also contracted Covid-19 and was taken to North Middlesex Hospital; she has since recovered and is home.
Neophytos was born 11th December 1946 in Erimi, Cyprus. The son of Nikola and Egli, he was part of an immediate family of nine. He had three brothers: Alexandros, Antonaki and Koko, and three sisters: Maroulla, Savoulla and Lalla.
Neophytos attended Lanition Gymnasium in Limassol.
He came to the UK in May 1963 at the age of 16. He first lived in Kentish Town and studied at Pitmans College.
He married Evoulla from Limassol on 17th August 1969 and lived in Palmers Green.
He worked in the rag trade for several years and later became General Manager of Parikiaki. He then became Organising Secretary for AKEL in Britain and was General Secretary and a member of the Executive Committee of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK.
In his later years, Neophytos was instrumental in raising thousands of pounds for charity, notably Radiomarathon, where he was made a Trustee.
The Management and Staff of Parikiaki extend their condolences to the family and we thank him for his services to our newspaper and our community.
He will never be forgotten and will always be held close to our hearts.
