Nick Kyrios cruised through to the second round, after defeating Portugal’s Frederico Ferreira Silva in a straight sets win, with the scoreline reading 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

It took the 25-year old under two hours to win his first round in the Australian Open, giving a pretty strong performance, and showing hardly any signs of the knee injury that had been causing him issues in the lead-up tournaments.

His next game will be a challenge as he meets Ugo Humbert, world No 32 on Wednesday.

“Honestly, it was pretty average. I haven’t played a grand slam match in over a year. I was nervous coming out here, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to play my best tennis out here. But I’m just happy I got through ultimately,” Kyrgios told Jim Courier in an interview after the game.

“It’s going to be very tricky,” Kyrgios added referring to his opponent, Ugo Humbert. “He’s an amazing player. He’s one of the most improved players, I think he won a few titles last year.”
