Mick McCarthy, the former Republic of Ireland and Wolves manager, has been sacked by Nicosia club Apoel after just two months in charge.The 2-1 defeat on Tuesday evening by Doxa Katokopias was the last straw.In this game Apoel got off to a good start and led from the 8th minute with a goal from De Vincenti, with Doxa equalising in the 26th minute through Sadik who scored again in the 75th minute with a penalty to give Doxa their sixth win of the season.

In the nine games that McCarthy was in charge, eight in the league and one in the Cyprus cup, Apoel managed just 3 wins, one draw and five defeats that saw the club drop into the relegation zone.

Apoel have sacked 16 managers in the last eight years.

When Mick McCarthy joined Apoel they were 10th in the Cypriot top flight after two wins, three losses and three draws in their first eight games of the season. Terry Connor also joined McCarthy in Cyprus as assistant on the deal for both to run until May 2022

Previous to him McCarthy coming to the club a run of four league games without a win proved the end for Greek coach Marinos Ouzounidis, the club0s 12th permanent coach since 2015.The club are now languishing in 10th place from 14 outfits with only nine points after eight games.

The 62-year-old former Ireland international won promotion to the Premier League in charge of both Sunderland and Wolves.

He led Ireland to qualify for the 2002 World Cup with the team advancing from their group only to be eliminated by Spain in a penalty shootout.

McCarthy had been out of a job since leaving the Republic of Ireland in April and had not worked at club level since being sacked by Ipswich Town in 2018.

In the other games on Tuesday Paralimni drew with Karmiotissa 2-2 Paralimni were leading 2-1 with five minutes to go and Karmiotissa equalised in added time.  Paralimni goals were scored by Theodorou and Markovsky and Karmiotissa came from Bargan and Malekkides.

Nea Salamina beat Ermis Aradippou 2-1 with a great fight back the reds were 1-0 down to a Ermis goal in the 38th minute from Kyprou and it took to the last ten minutes for New Salamis to score two goals through Sidebe and Nicolaou.
