The biggest Haringey tree planting programme in more than a decade is ramping up – with a maximum of 816 new trees being planted around the borough.

As part of the council’s work to create an even greener borough, there will be at least 794 trees planted across 13 wards in total. A further 22 trees will be available to plant at priority locations in Haringey’s six other wards.

Funding for the programme has been secured from numerous sources, including: the DEFRA Urban Tree Challenge Fund; our Capital Programme; donated trees; external grants; the Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy; one-off projects; planting by partners; regeneration projects; sponsorship and ward budgets.

This season’s tree planting is taking place in three separate sections. The first tranche saw 110 trees planted across Alexandra (15 trees), Harringay (Six trees), Noel Park (56 trees) and Tottenham Hale (18 trees) wards and was completed last week, with Haringey Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Equalities and Leisure, Cllr Kirsten Hearn, lending a helping hand at one – the Sandlings Estate in Wood Green.

Cllr Hearn said: “What a fantastic way to mark National Tree Week. It’s great that we’re planting even more trees here in Haringey – our highest annual number in many a moon. They help improve air quality in the borough, as well as the street scene here and the canopy coverage in our parks. Thank you to the Parks team for all their hard work in making this possible and our external partners for the money.”

The second session will see 584 trees being planted in the nine wards that have less than 20% existing canopy cover from today (Tuesday 1 December) until Friday 5 March 2021. Those nine wards, and the number of trees allocated to each, are as follows:

  • St Ann’s: 48
  • Bruce Grove: 95
  • Hornsey: 48
  • Noel Park: 95
  • Northumberland Park: 62
  • Seven Sisters: 31
  • Tottenham Green: 62
  • West Green: 48
  • Woodside: 95

The third and final segment is expected to be completed between March and April of next year, with 122 trees planted in St Ann’s (20 trees) and Highgate (40 trees), as well as 40 trees being shared out between Bruce Grove, Tottenham Green and Tottenham Hale.

The further 22 trees earmarked for priority locations in Haringey’s six other wards will also be planted during this last stage of the project.

Overall, the tree planting programme ward-by-ward during the 2020/2021 seasons is as follows:

  • Alexandra: 15
  • Bruce Grove: 108
  • Harringay: Six
  • Highgate: 40
