Member of the scientific team, professor of microbiology and molecular virology at the Medical School of the University of Cyprus, Dr. Petros Karayiannis, has expressed fears that there will be an increase in the number of coronavirus cases, noting that people are careless and not observing measures.
In statements to CNA, he said there was an increase in cases worldwide and noted that Cyprus’ record number of 457 cases on Thursday was higher than expected.
He also said the picture depended on the next few days, to determine whether Thursday’s results were an exception.
Asked if stricter measures would be decided, Dr. Karayiannis said this depended on the results of the next few days.
Regarding vaccinations, Dr. Karayiannis said Cyprus was ready to start on December 27 and that retirement houses would be a priority.
He added that vaccinations would take time and that until 70% of the population was immune, the protective measures would continue to be necessary.
