UK Cypriot Anastasia Georgiou celebrated her 100th birthday

Anastasia Georgiou was born in the small village of Yerani in the famagusta district of Cyprus on the 13th November 1920. She was the elder of three sisters and one brother. In 1935 the family left Cyprus and moved to London. To help the family finances Anastasia began work in the tailoring industry. On 6th August 1939 she married Christos from Kambia and on 6th August 1940 gave birth to their only child, Andros .

The family were bombed at the time during the Second World War Two blitz and were relocated to Camberley in Surrey, the family still have a dining chair with a badly burnt leg as a reminder of those years.

Returning to London in the later years of the 1940”s she again took up work in the rag trade and because she was well spoken in Greek and in English she often helped many Cypriots with interpretations. For many years she lived in the Camden Town area of London where at the time a large part of the population was Cypriot. There is now only small remnant of the that population left.

She lost her husband Christos in the 1970 and subsequently moved to Finchley to live with her son Andros and daughter-in- law Maroulla .she carried on working, retiring at the age of 73 .

Sadly over five years ago Anastasia lost her sight and became increasingly frail and it was no longer possible for her to receive the degree of care necessary for the wellbeing at home.

Since then the Ourris family and colleagues at Autumn Gardens care home have assumed this responsibility with the highest degree of care, affection and professionalism. They have our heartfelt thanks
