The Health authorities have informed the European Commission that Cyprus needs 1,2 million COVID-19 vaccines.
Turkish Cypriots’ needs are included.
The Health Ministry issued an announcement on Tuesday saying that Cyprus has informed the Commission three weeks ago, in the framework of the negotiations the EU member states have with the EC on the issue.
The Ministry recalls the initiative by Commissioner Stella Kyriakides according to which 2.7 billion euro will be used from the Emergency Support Instrument as an investment amount in companies that have made a good progress as regards the trials for an effective COVID-19 vaccine. The Commission is already in negotiations with AstraZeneca.
Cyprus’ Health Ministry points out that this cooperation provides that no member state will have separate negotiations or will proceed with separate orders as the EC is the sole negotiator on behalf of all states and thus there will be equity for all.
A coordination committee has been set up by the EC with representatives from MS.
A Health Ministry official is representing Cyprus.
