We sadly announce that Andreas Michael Chialoufas passed away yesterday evening June 19th 2020 at the age of 90.
Andreas leaves behind his wife Christalla from Omodhos and his three children from his first wife Valerie who sadly passed away in 1981, Jenny, Stella and Michael. Eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren…of which he was waiting this year to meet them as they planned to come to Cyprus..
Andreas Chialoufas was the General Manager of Parikiaki newspaper from 1984 to 1995. He was one of the ardent activists within the UK Cypriot community. Also, he was the Educational Chairman of Kingsbury High Greek School for over 20 years which he was very involved with.
And was a member of the executive committee of OESEKA (Federation of Educational Societies of Greek Cypriots in England). Additionally an active member of the central committee of AKEL.
Andreas was also a co founder of the Cypriot Wine Festival. And more recently in Cyprus he was the Chairman of the Pan Cyprian Association of repatriated Cypriots from England for over 25 years to date..
Andreas Chialoufas was also very proud to have been honoured with the Brent Council citizenship in 1995.
Andreas Chialoufas was born 26th July 1930 in the village of Alithinou in Cyprus, the son of Michael and Eugenia of a family of seven he had four sisters Maria , Eleni, Phinikou and Koulla he attended the Samuel Commercial school in Nicosia . He came to the UK at an early age in the early 50’s and worked as a waiter and later in 1954 he started his own business as one of the first Cypriot Grocery shops in Cleveland street, with his wife and the 3 children were born in the West End of which he had 30 years and was the pillar of the local community helping all the Cypriots that had just emigrated to the UK from Cyprus as he spoke the English language fluently.
He returned to Cyprus when he retired in 1995, and lived in Zakaki until now, plus spent at least 3 to 4 days a week in Alithinou as he was the Koinotachis ( Muktari ) of the village and loved rebuilding his tiny village and improving it, plus every year he arranged the village summer dinner dance and was the pillar of the community
