Turkish challenges in Cyprus’ EEZ do not allow for any complacency, Presidential Commissioner says

The tragedy of the Greek Cypriots combined with the escalation of Turkish challenges within Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone and the challenges faced by Greece on a daily basis, remind us that we are going through important historical and politically critical moments, Presidential Commissioner Fotis Fotiou said.

Fotiou said that Turkey with its arrogant behavior and blackmailing tactics has replaced international law with ” jungle law “and” gunboat diplomacy» undermining the stability and security of the wider Middle East region.

He said that Turkey by ignoring every notion of respect for international law and every concept of geography continues its illegal pirate actions in the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus.

Fotiou said that these challenges do not allow for any complacency.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
