Parikiaki’s Michael Yiakoumi was at the Royal Albert Hall last week to see four days of exciting competition, Team Greg – comprised of Tommy Haas, Marcos Baghdatis and captain Greg Rusedski – emerged victorious at myWorld Champions Tennis. They defeated Team Goran (Juan Carlos Ferrero, Xavier Malisse and captan Goran Ivanisevic) 3-1 in Sunday’s championship match at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

”This has been brilliant. I’ve loved the new format. It’s been great to win this event for the first time, especially in the team format,” Rusedski said. “I think the team this week was brilliant with Tommy and Marcos. I think the crowd really enjoyed it. It was all pretty tight throughout the week with the three teams and it just came down to a few points.

Ferrero opened up the championship with a convincing 4-3, 4-1 win over Haas. The Spaniard went undefeated (5-0) in his singles matches for Team Goran.

”My body is not as good as the first days, but it was great. “I felt good once I got going and my serve is helping a lot with some aces throughout,” Ferrero said. “I tried to keep going and I tried to make Team Goran win.”

Haas rebounded in the doubles with Greg Rusedski and they eased past Malisse/Ivanisevic 4-0, 4-3. The German-British duo won all three of their doubles matches together this week.

”I really like this new format. Playing two matches back-to-back isn’t that bad!” Haas said. “You start to feel it in the second match when you get to a certain age and don’t train as much, but it’s obviously a lot of fun playing in this arena and in front of the crowd. The doubles was really fun with great guys on court. I feel very privileged to be here.”

Baghdatis brought it home for Team Greg in the last two matches of the event. He cruised past Malisse 4-2, 4-2, then teamed up with Rusedski for a 4-1, 4-2 win over Ivanisevic/Ferrero.

”We had a lot of fun out there, so whatever the result, it didn’t matter,” Baghdatis said. “The goal was to have fun and the most important thing was to make sure the crowd enjoyed it. If they enjoyed it, I enjoyed it! I loved it out there so much.”

Another team competition will kick off the 2020 season when the Delray Beach Open by VITACOST.com returns from 14-16 February. Baghdatis, Haas and David Ferrer are already confirmed to suit up for Team World as they face Team America.

Also at the event the President of the National Federation of Cypriots in the UK Christos Karaolis presented Cypriot tennis star Marcos Baghdatis a shield for his contributions to Cypriot tennis and the Cypriot diaspora.
