AKEL on the Cyprus problem
Anastasiades must declare from the UN General Assembly that only one option exists: the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of bi-zonal, bi-communal federation
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25th September 2019, Nicosia

Much can be said about the exchange of words between Christodoulides-Cavusoglu and what has been said about it by various sides in recent years with regards a pursuit of other solutions by President Anastasiades. This isn’t the time though.

What is paramount right now is for everyone to fully comprehend the criticalness of the current period.
President Anastasiades must declare from the podium of the UN General Assembly that only one option exists: the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality as outlined in the relevant UN Resolutions.

He must declare that a two-state solution or confederation is not and indeed will never be an option. Furthermore, he needs to demonstrate his readiness to reach an agreement on the Terms of Reference, immediately and quickly, on the basis of the Joint Declaration, Convergences recorded and the Guterres Framework. He should abandon the demonization of the concept of political equality and return – both he, but also the Turkish Cypriot leader as well – to the relative convergence on effective participation.

This is the most effective way to end the debate that has opened, for Mr. Cavusoglu to get the appropriate reply and – most importantly – to overcome the stalemate on the Cyprus problem that harbors enormous dangers for Cyprus and its people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
