While Nick Kyrgios prepares to defend his Brisbane International title, he also reveals he is quite “rusty”.

Even though the former world No 13 has trained hard to overcome his elbow injury that cut his 2018 season short in October, another reason beyond his control had him spent Christmas in hospital.

Kyrgios, 23, revealed on social media he was getting treated in a Canberra hospital after being bitten on the foot by a spider.

“Got a spider bite on my foot. Christmas different every year,” he posted on Instagram under a picture of himself with an intravenous drip captioned: “This spider bite outta control”.

Australia’s No2 initially said that the spider bite and the hospital visit would not derail him from performing, something that was also backed by the organisers.

His most recent comments, however, appear to be less optimistic as swelling from the bite on his foot has not completely subsided.

“It has definitely impacted my preparation. I haven’t stepped on court for the last couple of days but it’s getting better,” he told AAP.

“I will be rusty to be honest. I wouldn’t be surprised if I go out there and hit 30 unforced errors.

“I didn’t take it [bite] seriously. I just felt an irritation on my foot the day before Christmas. I woke up Christmas Day and my foot was really swollen. I have been in hospital the last couple of days getting antibiotics but I think I will be OK.”
