Almost 100 children completed a swim-bike-run recently as part of the first Spirit Kids Cup event held in Paphos, Cyprus. Developed by Swiss Olympian Nicola Spirig, the Spirit Kids Cup events aim to encourage children to participate in physical activity by creating a triathlon event that is fun, exciting and rewarding for both the children and their families.

More than 4000 children have competed in the Kids Cups events in Switzerland, Greece and now Cyprus.

Nicola Spirig, an Olympic Gold Medal winner in triathlon, was at the event in Paphos to encourage and cheer on the participants. “These events are a passion of mine as I am committed to helping children discover the pleasures of participating in sport,” she said.

“I was very happy to see so many children have such a great time at the Kids Cup event on Saturday and it was one of the highest participation rates we have had outside of Switzerland. The Kids Cup events are not about who was the winner, but about allowing all the children to be part of something fun and feeling proud that they completed the swim, bike and run.”

Nicola added that the location for the event was ideal. “The Geroskipou Sports Center [in Paphos] is a great facility – with the pool and running track providing a safe yet practical location for the event.

Nicola thanked the local organisers Mokapot Productions and the many volunteers who helped on the day. “The support from the local community, officials, local organisers and volunteers was wonderful and gave me the opportunity to focus on handing out the medals to all the children, which I enjoyed immensely,” she said.
