Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters and officers have been called to a fire at a house on Winchmore Hill Road in Southgate.

Part of the first floor and half of the roof was alight in the two floored terraced house. Nine people from the house and the adjoining property evacuated before the Brigade arrived.

Station Manager Chris Layton who was at the scene, said: “On arrival there was a lot of smoke issuing from the roof of the house.  Crews worked very hard to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjoining property and made good steady progress.

“Crews will remain at the scene damping down remaining pockets of fire.  Motorists are advised to avoid the area as the road will remain closed for a while.”

The Brigade was called at 1016 and the incident was over by 1312.  Crews from Southgate, Edmonton, Tottenham, Finchley, Walthamstow, Chingford were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
