Turkish Cypriot police have confirmed that a woman has been killed and that the husband has been detained in what is the second such shock killing in the north of the island in just two days.

According to media sources, the 37-year-old victim – who has been named in some circles as being Gamze Pehlivan – was murdered in what is an apparent case of domestic violence. Her husband Suat Asir has been detained.

The same sources say that the couple, originally from Turkey, was here on holiday and was on a bus on their way to Famagusta from Nicosia when they started arguing. It was then, according to witnesses, that the husband began accusing Gamze of being unfaithful to him prompting her to get off the bus close to the International Cyprus University in Nicosia.

Her angry husband then reportedly followed her and stabbed her with what is believed to have been a knife.

Gamze was rushed to the Dr Burhan Nalbantoglu hospital in Nicosia where doctors pronounced her dead-on-arrival.

The husband was arrested a short time later.

On Tuesday, Burcu Okumus was stabbed to death by her husband on a busy street in Famagusta following a heated row between the married couple in a nearby coffee shop.

Her husband, Ozgur Okumus, attempted to take his own life by stabbing himself in the chest with the same knife but survived as is currently in hospital under police guard.
