The events that took place both inside and outside Parliament, which stain our political culture and justifiably raise questions among the people are unacceptable.
However, all these unacceptable events – highlighted by the hooliganism against the General Secretary of AKEL outside Parliament – did not come out of nowhere, nor do we accept the levelling and policy of equal distancing and apportioning equal blame which certain forces and circles are now trying to promote in order to shake off the heavy responsibilities they themselves have for the climate of division and fanaticism they have cultivated.
There are moral instigators responsible for this climate. The moral instigators are political parties, politicians and the mass media who with the hate rhetoric and fanaticism that were sowing for weeks, caused the damaging situation of discord and tension on the domestic front.
All of them on a daily basis for weeks were talking about “red-blue sell-outs”, “submissiveness and concessions”, ” Akinci’s provocative stand which is fed by the behavior of A. Kyprianou”, “surrender to Turkish demands”, “compliance with Turkey’s assertions”, “secret consultations to meet the Turkish side’s demands”, “contempt and scorn of the Constitution”, “submission to Turkey’s appetites”, “the Turks do not respect sell-outs”, “the dissolution of the state”, “nightmares” and about “the humiliation of the House of Representatives” and much more.
All these assertions were aimed at conveying the message to citizens that those voting for DISY’s proposal are ready to betray and humiliate and surrender them to Turkey’s demands; that they only those who are against the proposal are patriots and are defending the interests of people.
The political parties, politicians and the mass media which on a daily basis for weeks were repeating all these and more, are all very well-known. They were saying and writing all of these assertions. There can’t now pretend to be distressed, claiming to be innocent or a deceitful neutral.
AKEL denounces before the people this rhetoric of hate and fanaticism which has divided people and society. The Party in a letter it will address to both the Attorney General and the President of the House of Representatives will file a complaint about the whole situation.
AKEL will continue with soberness, wisdom, seriousness and responsibility to work for a solution to the Cyprus problem, which will bring liberation and the reunification of our country and the people.
