The resumption of the negotiations on the Cyprus problem is a positive development. We hope that the meetings between the two leaders will lead to an agreement on the procedure that will in turn lead to substantive negotiations.
For an effective negotiation to take place important pending political issues must be discussed. Through the discussion of these issues and submission of specific proposals it will become clear whether the two sides can record new convergences and come closer towards achieving an agreed solution.
In view of the resumption of the negotiations, we stress the need for a political climate characterized by levelheadedness and political arguments to prevail, instead of insulting descriptions and labelling that foster fanaticism and divide political forces into traitors and patriots.
AKEL will continue to act prudently, with seriousness and responsibility far from extremism and fanaticism. This is what the well-intentioned interests of the country and the critical moments we are going through demand.
