The new US administration, under President Donald Trump, believes in a just solution for Cyprus, AHEPA Supreme President Andrew Zachariades said on Wednesday.

He was speaking after a meeting between an AHEPA delegation, headed by Zachariades, and the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, in Nicosia, during which they were informed on developments in Cyprus talks, the economy, energy and bilateral ties with the US. AHEPA members met earlier separately with Presidential Commissioner Photis Photiou for Humanitarian Issues and Overseas Cypriots, at the Presidential Palace, who briefed them on the issue of missing persons and diaspora-related matters.

Speaking about the Cyprus problem, Zachariades said he was confident that “something will be done” on the part of the US and added that AHEPA is standing by the President and Cyprus.

Moreover, he noted that it is time for Turkey to contribute to a Cyprus solution, after 43 years. “We all say `enough` ” said Zachariades.

Speaking about the issue of missing persons, the Supreme President of AHEPA said that this is a major issue and they will never stop fighting for it.

From his part, Photiou thanked the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association for supporting the struggle of Cypriot people all these years.

He added that they discussed “a more dynamic role of AHEP in promoting this humanitarian issue” of missing persons and agreed to proceed with initiatives in the US, aiming to strengthen the effort on missing persons with the help of Overseas Cypriots.

The Presidential Commissioner said finally that they discussed the trilateral cooperation scheme between Cyprus, Greece and Israel on diaspora matters, with Photiou noting that the contribution of Overseas Cypriots is always important.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. UN-backed talks aim to reunite the island under a federal roof.
