Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis has announced that he has been cleared to return to competing by his doctors. An ankle injury sidelined the former world number eight for more than two months.

Baghdatis will represent his country in next week’s Davis Cup Group II against Tunisia, April 7-9. He hasn’t played since his second-round loss to Spaniard Rafa Nadal at the Australian Open.

The Cypriot has played only three ATP events so far this season — Doha, Auckland and the Australian Open. The 31-year-old had a good run at Auckland — where he fell short in the semi-final stage to Joao Sousa of Portugal.

”I am finally glad to be given the go-ahead from my doctors to start my training and get back on court,” Baghdatis said, as revealed on his website. “Having taken time to treat my ankle, I am now looking forward to being back on court and I am working hard together with my team to maintain my fitness and get going again. I was glad for the positive report from the doctor so I can also take part in the Davis Cup tie next week! See you in Cyprus!”

World number 50 Baghdatis has played in 43 ties so far in his career for his country. He has a notable 47-3 record in singles rubbers, and a record of 20 wins and 10 losses in doubles ones.
