A man who sexually assaulted women on the London underground over the course of five years has been jailed for two years.
Saiful Islam, aged 27, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at Blackfriars Crown Court on 27 February, to six counts of sexual assault.
He was yesterday (25/4) sentenced at the same court to two years’ imprisonment and ordered to sign the Violent and Sex Offender Register for ten years.
Between 2012 and 2017, Saiful Islam sexually assaulted six women on trains on the underground.
In five of the cases, Saiful Islam ejaculated on the women’s clothing before exiting the train.
His DNA was found on all the items of clothing.
The incidents happened on the Westbound central line at Liverpool station in August 2012, on the Northbound Northern Line from London Bridge in August 2012, on an Eastbound central line train from Holborn in September 2012, on the Piccadilly line from Holborn in December 2016 against two women and on the Westbound Piccadilly line from Holborn in January 2017.
He was arrested by British Transport Police in January this year, under Operation Spectrum.
Investigating officer, Det Con Allan McTaggart, said: “The victims gave statements to describe how disgusted and violated they felt by Saiful Islam’s behaviour. They were upset, angry, shocked – these women were simply travelling on the railway when they were subject to a revolting attack by Saiful Islam.
“I am extremely pleased that he is now behind bars where he cannot do this to any more women.
“The arrest and conviction of Islam after five years of offending shows the commitment of BTP to pursuing every offender committing crime on the London Underground network, no matter the challenges.
“This man pleaded guilty to his crimes five years after they began, believing that his previous offences had been forgotten. The case should serve a as reminder that BTP constantly reviews historic offences and remains committed to bringing offenders to justice.
“If you have experienced unwanted sexual behaviour on the railway network, please report it by calling 0800 40 50 40, or you can discreetly text 61016 if you feel more comfortable doing that, or of course you can speak to any member of rail staff or BTP officer at the station or on the train.
“We take all reports seriously and our specially trained officers will support you through every stage of the process. Every report helps us to build a picture and ultimately to arrest and detain sex offenders such as Saiful Islam.”
