The attack launched by the US in Syria constitutes a new act in the long tragedy the Syrian people are suffering. Donald Trump is continuing more aggressively and ruthlessly the intervention in Syria which the US, Turkey, the Gulf Monarchies, but also the European Union have been waging for five tears now to overthrow the Assad government and install a “servile” regime willing to assist them in their geopolitical and energy plans for the establishment of a “New Middle East”.
They are the very same forces that funded, trained and armed the forces of the Syrian opposition, which was the breeding ground from which sprang the murderous hordes of the “Islamic State”. These are the very same forces which instead of fighting the “IS” organization were fighting the forces fighting “IS” on the ground, namely the army and Kurds of Syria. Today they are proceeding to carry out an immediate intervention and military aggression – something that was never abandoned from the plans of the NATO headquarters – because they see that on the arena of military confrontation they aren’t managing to impose themselves. This intervention will give a breathing space to the “IS” to regroup its forces and fight back.
All these actions demonstrate that the fact of the use of chemical weapons against civilians is a pretext. We stress that the Assad government’s responsibility has not even been confirmed. Furthermore, we point out that on previous occasions it was proved that it was in fact the opposition forces that used chemical weapons, but a similar sensitivity wasn’t shown by the West. This brutal and immoral instrumentalization of human suffering by the US government to legitimize its wars and plans, reveals once again the very nature of imperialism.
AKEL recalls that humanity has seen the US leaders and their allies again shed tears for “peace” and “democracy” and talk about “Sadam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction”; actions and talk were justifying the invasion of Iraq. They were proclaiming they would save the people of Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Libya… We all know what followed. The dead and the bloodshed will multiply. The country will be completely destroyed raised to the ground and the Western monopolies will subsequently invade the country to “rebuild” it. The plans to divide and turn Syria into a protectorate will be put on the table.
AKEL denounces the US attack and joins its voice with all the peace-loving forces throughout the world who are demanding an overall end to the foreign intervention and war in Syria. We demand a peaceful solution that will be based on the respect for the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Syria and the right of its people to choose the leadership and path of its homeland.
We urge on the Cyprus Government not to rush again to declare itself a willing ally in the new raid and general plans.
