Enfield Town was brought to a stand-still on Friday (21 April) after a dragon swooped onto the high street with a message of multiculturalism and tolerance, inspired by Saint George.

Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Arts & Culture, Cllr Yasemin Brett, was accompanied by a dragon and with Mayor of Enfield, Bernadette Lappage at her side, marked St. George’s Day with a dramatic display aimed at inspiring pride in England’s patron saint and praising Enfield’s diversity and tolerance.

Cllr Brett said: “St. George’s Day, celebrated on 23 April, traditionally embodies notions of chivalry and bravery.

“But there is much more to the story of St. George. He was a migrant from a vibrant multi-cultural background persecuted for his religious beliefs.

“He has inspired myths and legends. For the people of Enfield – whose coat of arms coincidentally is a mythical dragon-type beast – we can take great pride in our own cultural diversity, tolerance and ethics and we are fiercely proud of our nation. Please join me in marking this wonderful national day of celebration.”

Cllr Brett and Mayor Lappage distributed leaflets to members of the public explaining the story of St. George and its significance, while also collecting money for the Mayor’s charity Enfield Sounds Great. The charity is a year-long musical festival dedicated to raising funds to support various musical causes in the borough.
