AKEL will not kneel in front of any thugs, the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou said in statements outside the House of Representatives, who came under verbal attack by a group of people who had gathered there, a little while after the House approved the draft bill tabled by DISY, which provides that the responsibility for determining school anniversaries where messages, leaflets and a few minutes of discussion in class will be transferred to the Ministry of Education and Culture.
Mr. Kyprianou said that “whether some circles and forces like it or not we have a democracy” and he noted that “these are the same ideas that led Cyprus to the great catastrophe of 1974”.
“AKEL is not going to do them a favour. AKEL does not kneel in front of anyone, whether he is called Akinci or called Anastasiades, or whether they are called thugs, because we are talking about thugs”, he said.
He pointed out that “AKEL sets above all else the interests of Cyprus and the Cypriot people and will continue to work focused and devoted to the goal in order to reach a solution.”
“What interests us more than anything else is to reverse the results of the betrayal that was committed by certain forces and circles, namely the ancestors of these people who are swearing at us today because we do not want to see, neither the Turkish flag on the occupied Pentadactylos mountain range, nor the fact that we cannot move freely in our country. The only way to achieve this goal is to solve the Cyprus problem, to liberate and reunify our country. Whatever they say, they should know that they will not make us yield”, he concluded.
