Previously convicted notorious Larnaca businessman Antonis Fanieros died on Monday evening at a private clinic in Nicosia. He had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Notorious Fanieros, aged 72, had seeked a court order restoring his rights so that he could run in the last parliamentary election. His order was rejected.

Fanieros, who had been jailed in relation to gambling and for his part in a shares scam, famously survived a drive-by machine gun attack in May 1997.
