Cyprus Children’s Fund President Mr Savvas Tsivicos and Cyprus First Lady Mrs Andri Anastasiades
March 5 at the Loeb Boathouse in Central Park, New York, the Cyprus Children’s Fund held its Annual Testimonial Dinner honoring the first lady of Cyprus Ms Andri Anastasiades and Judge Harriet Pavles George.
Established in 1974 after the Turkish invasion and occupation of the northern third of Cyprus, the non-profit organization was created to help the hundreds of misplaced Greek-Cypriot children following the invasion.
At this year’s event, the First Lady of Cyprus, Andri Anastasiades, was honored and given the Humanitarian and Philanthropic Award. Married to Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, the President of the Republic of Cyprus since 1971, the First Lady has been involved in various programs which revolve around improving the lives of children including acting as the Honorary President of the Pancyprian Association for the Protection of Spastic and Handicapped Children, Honorary Chairman of the Committee for the Support of Children of Cyprus and America, Patroness of the Association “One Dream One Wish” and as the Honorary President of “Elpida” Foundation for Children with Cancer and Leukemia.
There was also the special recognition of Judge Harriet Pavles George for her service and dedication to the CFF. The Honorable Harriet George was born in Queens county to Greek-Cypriot and Italian parents. She has served as a Board Member of the Cyprus Children’s Fund for many years and throughout her career she has consistently found the time to be involved with religious, civic and philanthropic organizations.
Nowadays, the CCF has extended its reach to help children who are not only refugees, but also children from underprivileged families or dysfunctional families. The organization also offers annual scholarships to underprivileged students attending American universities. In 2016 the organization raised over $200,000.00 in donations and scholarships.
