Cyprus and Egypt held on Monday a joint search and rescue exercise under the name “CYPEGYP – 01/17”.

The exercise was carried out at sea, south of Cyprus, with the participation of aeronautical means of the Republic of Cyprus and the ship SHALADEIN of the Navy of Egypt.

A press release issued by the Cyprus Ministry of Defence says that the Rescue and Coordination Centre located in the coastal town of Larnaka had the coordination and operational control of the aeronautical means which took part in the exercise.

Cyprus Defence Minister Christophoros Fokaides, accompanied by the Navy Captain Kyriakos Pochanis, visited the ship following an invitation by the Captain of the ship in cooperation with the Egyptian Embassy in Nicosia.

In his address, the Defence Minister said that the visit of the ship to Cyprus and the exercise that was carried out is part of the bilateral military cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt. He added that regular visits of high officials and the joint exercises are an indication of the level of relations established between the two countries.

The ship was also visited by Ambassadors and Defence Attachés of foreign corps in Cyprus.
