Police continue to appeal for information and witnesses following an attempted carjacking in Chingford.
One week on from an appeal on BBC Crimewatch on Monday, 6 March, supported by both victims including former boxer Michael Watson, officers continue to appeal to information to help trace a white Mercedes car involved in the incident.
An investigation was launched after police were called at 16:53hrs on Thursday, 16 February to reports of an attempted robbery on The Ridgeway, Chingford.
The victims, Mr Watson, aged 51, and a 54-year-old man, were driving in their blue VW Golf ‘R’ in The Ridgeway when it was involved in a minor collision with a white Mercedes car – possibly an ‘e’ or ‘c’ class.
The driver of the Golf got out to speak with the two male occupants of the Mercedes but as he approached the car he was squirted in the face with a substance, believed to be ammonia. He was then assaulted by both men.
One of the men then got into the VW Golf with Mr Watson still inside. Mr Watson was also sprayed in the face with the same substance before trying to get out of the car. However, he became entangled in the seatbelt and the car was driven away with him half hanging out of the vehicle.
He was dragged along the road for approximately 300metres before the car stopped.
The suspect got out of the car and both suspects drove off in the white Mercedes. They turned right at the end of The Ridgeway into Kings Road.
The suspects are described as two black men wearing dark clothing.
Both Mr Watson and his companion were assessed at the scene by the London Ambulance Service before being taken to an east London hospital for further treatment. Both were subsequently discharged.
CCTV footage released to support the investigation shows Mr Watson’s car being followed by the white Mercedes in The Ridgeway in the moments prior to the collision
There has been no arrest. Enquiries are ongoing.
