Cyprus league leader APOEL achieved a great victory on Sunday with 1-0 over Anorthosis of Famagusta in Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium with 1-0 in the framework of match day 1 of the second phase of the Cyprus league.
APOEL beat Anorthosis Famagusta 1-0 on Sunday evening at Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca, with the Cypriot champions scoring the only goal in the match early on in the game.
Roberto Lago wasted no time when he sent the ball from the left to teammate Pieros Sotiriou, who then scored with a header at the eighth minute.
After the Anorthosis – Apoel match on Sunday police arrested six people for rioting in Larnaca while four members of the police force were injured.
According to police, about 150 Anorthosis fans gathered in Papanikoli avenue after the game. They had previously started to fight with another group and police intervened.
When the group spotted police officers outside the stadium they hurled stones and other objects at them and six of the rioters were subsequently arrested.
The arrested men are a 16-year-old from Dheryneia, an 18-year-old and a 33-year-old from Larnaca, two people aged 20 and 26 from Sotira and a 17-year-old from Paralimni.
Of the four officers who were injured one was examined at Paralimni General Hospital after he felt a pain in his chest but was released when doctors found he was not harmed, one was diagnosed with an injury to his left wrist at Nicosia General Hospital, one had stitches for a 2cm wound in his right leg and the fourth did not need treatment.
The six arrested men are expected to appear in court later on Monday.
Another four people reported to police on Sunday evening that they were attacked by Apoel fans after the Larnaca match.
The four men, residents of Larnaca, said Apoel fans beat them up.
Two of them, a 55-year-old and a 29-year-old, received first aid at the Larnaca hospital, the 55-year-old for an injury to his left eye and the 29-year-old for a wound to his forehead while his eyes were also irritated due to spray used by police officers.
They were released after being treated.
The match day 1 concludes on Monday at 19:00 with the game between AEK of Larnaca and Omonia of Nicosia in AEK Arena.
