AEK Larnaca missed out on the chance to trim the gap on league leaders APOEL on Monday night after being held to a 1-1 draw by ten-men Omonia at the AEK Arena.
The hosts had stormed into an early lead when David Catala was left unmarked to head his side ahead but Omonia rallied back after the break to equalise after Loukas Vyntra struck from close range after the AEK defenders had failed to deal with a corner.
Akis Ioakim’s Omonia were forced to play the latter stages of the game with ten men after George Florescu was shown a second yellow card. AEK missed out on the chance to clinch all three points when Ivan Trickovski sent his penalty kick onto Constantinos Panagi’s crossbar.
The draw kept Imanol Idiakez’s AEK six points adrift of leaders APOEL while second place Apollon – who were also held to a 1-1 draw on the weekend against derby rivals AEL – are five points off the summit.
