A total of 61 hopefuls submitted on Friday their candidacies for the European Parliament’s elections on Sunday, May 25.

The official ceremony began in the morning at Hilton Hotel in Nicosia and wrapped up at noon.

Cyprus will elect six MEPs.  Out of the 61 runners – party-affiliated and independent – six are Turkish Cypriots.
Chief Returning Officer Constantinos Nicolaides said that eight candidates are independent while the other 53 are party-affiliated.
He noted that according to the legislation a period of 24 hours is given to submit any objections against any candidacy.

Nicolaides noted that if there is no objection all candidates will be included in the ballots to be printed for the European elections in Cyprus.
