Prominent Cypriot businessman accused of raping under age girls named

Larnaca District Court has renewed a remand for six days for two Larnaca men accused of raping and corrupting underage girls.

The men, 59-year-old Larnaca businessman Akis Lefkaritis and 35-year-old Nikos Nikolaou, are accused of kidnapping, rape, bodily harm, and soliciting prostitutes between 26-28th of April.

The complaints come from a 15-year-old girl who said she met with 35-year-old Nikos Nikolaou after he contacted her via social media. She said he took her by force to an apartment in Nicosia and then raped her. Another girl, aged 14, was paid to go to the apartment and have sex with the 35-year-old, according to the allegations. The same scene was repeated in a Larnaca apartment with the 59-year-old, said police.

A quantity of drugs and computer equipment were confiscated from the apartment in Nicosia, and police are interviewing the mens’ families and friends in connection with the allegations.

Lefkaritis was hospitalised on Friday, after feeling unwell while in custody.

In the latest developments, the 14-year-old girl corroborated the 15-year-old’s. According to a phone call to a television channel from the 14-year-old’s mother, she was a vulnerable and troubled teen who had fallen victim to predators after her father abandoned the family.

According to media reports, the 59-year-old suspect was the subject of a similar complaint in the past, and settled it out of court.
