List of Turkish Cypriot voters for EP elections ready on Friday
The Election Service at the Interior Ministry has called on all Turkish Cypriot voters, holders of Cypriot ID, who wish to vote in the upcoming EP elections on May 25th, to register their residence address by next Friday, May 9th so that the list of eligible Turkish Cypriot voters can be finalized.
Assistant Returning Officer Demetris Demetriou has told CNA that according to available data a total of 95.000 Turkish Cypriots have Republic of Cyprus IDs and among them approximately 58.000 have registered an address in the northern Turkish occupied areas, while 789 have an address in the southern government controlled part of the country.
He explained that several thousand Turkish Cypriots had not registered an address when they applied for an ID.
Demetriou told CNA that May 9th is the deadline by which the list of Turkish Cypriot voters has to be finalized.
Replying to a question, he said that he believes that the number of people to register will be around 59.000.
Demetriou explained that those Turkish Cypriots who will not be included in the lists are those who failed to declare a residence address.
Replying to another question, Demetriou said that a total of five Turkish Cypriots have submitted their candidacies for the elections.
Assistant Returning Officer said that preparations for the elections are well underway, the number of polling stations and personnel will be finalized, clarifying that those stations located near the crossing points, (which facilitate movement to and from the occupied areas) will be staffed additionally by one Turkish speaking person to assist voters, should they need any assistance.
