Enfield – 70 firefighters tackle fire in restaurant and flats this morning
More than 70 firefighters have tackled a large blaze in a restaurant and a number of flats on High Street in Ponders End, Enfield, EN3.
The fire has affected the ground floor restaurant and a neighbouring business, as well as four flats.
The High Street is currently closed to traffic, and there is still a considerable amount of smoke in the area.
Twelve people escaped from the building before crews arrived.
Station Manager Mark Blomfield who is at the scene said: “Our firefighters have worked extremely hard in very challenging conditions to contain what was a very large blaze. The fire has damaged a restaurant and a number of flats, but fortunately crews have managed to stop the fire from spreading further.”
The Brigade was called at 0127 and the fire was under control at 0808.
Ten fire engines from Enfield, Edmonton, Chingford, Woodford, Tottenham, Walthamstow, Soho and Bethnal Green fire stations attended the scene.
Crews are expected to remain at the scene throughout the morning.
The cause of the fire will be investigated once the incident is over.
